The Highland School | A Democratic Day & Boarding School
About
We are a democratic school. Our daily social interactions provide the opportunity for individuals to learn. Children learn through experience - through following their interests, coming to terms with boundaries, and understanding the consequences of their actions. School Members are free to learn as they wish, when they are ready, to the extent that they are interested, with the full understanding that they make their own learning decisions. Through this process, individuals develop personal responsibility.
Life at Highland enables children to become responsible for their lives and their interactions with the community. The best way to learn the true weight of this responsibility is to carry it. By carrying it every day, individuals create meaningful lives.
Students are expected to make decisions about what they will learn or what projects they will pursue. Staff members are available to provide support or help with resources if requested.
